NYC Outfit I

The highlight of my first day in New York City was talking a walk on the High Line, which is an elevated railway that was converted into a walking trail, showcasing some of the city's architecture. (And thus starts the first of my outfit posts)

NYC... here's what's up

As most of you know, I am currently a masters student in the Goldring Arts Journalism program at Syracuse University. It's first of it's kind and only a few other programs like it exist. The opportunities that we get in this program are absolutely unparalleled. For example... NEW YORK CITY.

As a part of our spring semester, we get to go to NYC for 5 days before the semester starts to go to all kinds of artsy places and network with important people in our field. This is called the Immersion and is technically a class. Blogging about our experiences and reactions is a part of our grade, so you can expect double daily posts starting tomorrow. I'm planning on doing an outfit post (because I'm having too much fun planning outfits as it is...) separate from a regular blog post for the next 5 days.

What are some of our highlight events? Going to a taping of The Daily Show, visiting the New York Times, the Apollo Theater, MOMA, attending a workshop with critics, and eating at lots of fancy restaurants. On top of that, I'm going to the FIT museum, seeing an opera at the MET, and going to a play in Brooklyn. And there's a lot more on top of this. Nuts, right?

Though I've lived in New York State since July, I still haven't been to the city (but more on that later). This is my crash course before I start my internship at Bridal Guide in less than 2 weeks. Eep.

EVEN More Studding

Here's some inspo for today's DIY:

This project is a result of something that went three different ways. This used to be a orange-pinkish men's shirt. I had intended to make it into a skirt and it turned into a hideous potato sack looking thing. It was not cute. At. All. So I made it into an apron instead. I even got really crafty and used the buttoned cuffs as the halter part.

I cut the top collar off with the intention of making it just a neck piece. But the color was really not too flattering on someone who loses all their tan in the winter. So I dyed it black with some RIT dye. It ended up turning dark charcoal grey and the stitching turned a lighter shade of grey. I'm okay with that color combo.

Upon returning to Syracuse, I remembered I had 30 studs left over from my last studding frenzy. What better way to spice up a collar than stud it!? The material is stiff doubled cotton so I had to slice holes to stick the studs through. Push the pointy parts of the stud into the fabric so that they leave an indentation, then take a razor blade and poke the end through the fabric just enough to cut a few fibers. I even got a ruler out and attempted to measure and lay out the studs correctly... and then I didn't and eyeballed it instead.

I intended on going stud-happy like I usually do, but in the end, I actually reined it in. Only four per side. I plan on wearing this with any t-shirt I have. Maybe my obnoxious yellow LA Pride tee! Ok, fine, I'll take a lazy webcam pic so you don't notice my tired eyes and face lacking in makeup (I had an early flight).

A Favorite Blogger: Shan

This is one of my favorite bloggers: Shan from Tiny Toadstool! She doesn't host through blogger so I always forget to check out her site, but when I do, I spend sooooo long scrolling through all her outfits because they are completely adorable. She's a master pattern mixer and connoisseur of frilly underskirts.

She's a knitter and crafter and this is her master creation... look at that embroidery!

I actually used her as an example for a paper that I had to write this year about how museum curators create their own visual story and narrative through every art exhibition they put together. How is this related to fashion blogging? Shan created this felted beret along with a project called “Hello Tiny Toadstool.”

She sends this hat all around the world to different fashion and style bloggers who create their own outfit around the hat. It has evolved into a kind of nationalistic pride for each blogger, since they usually take their pictures at famous landmarks of their city or places that are generally special to them. What a fun way to connect fashion bloggers all over the world!

She always shoots pictures of herself jumping and never really hows her face directly. She's definitely created her own “brand” through her blog (which is something beaten in our heads in journalism).

Such as inspiration but she never looks at us... how modest.

MY New Years Eve Outfit

Remember my previous post about how NYE is black, gold, and bling and then I created polyvore collages? Well, I took my own advice by wearing something completely opposite. Typical. I was going to wear a black dress but the outfit looked too black and fancy for the bar that I frequently go to. My NYE plans usually happen at the last minute and with half of my closet 700 miles away, I do the best I can with what I have to work with. So I decided to wear light pink. IdowhatIwant.

UGH, this was a decent pic but photobombing was the theme of the night and this guy got me. That's my displeased face.
